Preparation of 140 BMW F 850 GS for the legendary adventure competition

As the transport date approaches, BMW Motorrad is working the preparations for 140 BMW F 850 GS, which will be used for the Int. GS Trophy Oceania will be sent to New Zealand in February 2020.

In order to meet the growing interest of drivers from all over the world, 140 motorcycles must now be ready for the event – a significant increase compared to the 114 machines prepared for the 2018 Central Asia edition.

This is, of course, not an ordinary BMW F 850 GS. For the 2020 edition, BMW Motorrad developed a tailor-made edition that combines technical data and colours in a way that is not for sale.

The decision for the F 850 GS means a return to the GS models of the middle class, following in the footsteps of the F 800 GS, which is located in the three int. GS Trophies 2008, 2010 and 2012.

The BMW F 850 GS.

The BMW F 850 GS, presented at the EICMA motorcycle fair in Milan for the 2018 model year, is a completely new design that replaces the F 800 GS, which has been produced over many years and is extremely successful.
It comes with a new two-cylinder parallel twin engine with 90-degree lifting pin offset and 270/450 degree ignition distance, a new steel bridge frame in shell construction, a completely new chassis design with the fuel tank above the engine, as well as a lower seat height and a body that offers the driver more protection, but also maximum freedom of movement in off-road applications.
The 70 kW (95 hp) motorcycle is ideally designed for off-road driving due to its 21/17 inch wheel combination, off-road chassis and off-road ergonomics.

The powerful, dynamic F 850 GS offers the latest electronic driver aids. Enduro Pro driving mode, dynamic traction control DTC, Dynamic ESA, ABS Pro and the Pro switching assistant ensure that the pilot can operate the motorcycle even more confidently and safely. All these new technologies are easily accessible and operable via a 6.5-inch TFT display. With BMW Motorrad Connectivity, the driver can also make phone calls, listen to music or navigate while driving.

Now the BMW F 850 GS has to prove itself in one of the toughest challenges available for a motorcycle: the International GS Trophy.

The BMW F 850 GS Int. GS Trophy 2020.

The special model BMW F 850 GS Int. GS Trophy is characterized by an independent colour scheme and combination of accessories. The unmistakable black-yellow colour scheme with the graphic of the Int is striking. GS Trophy. For this purpose, the gold anodization contrasts with the upside-down fork and the tubeless cross-spoke rims.

From the wide range of BMW Motorrad special equipment and original BMW Motorcycle accessories were made for the Int. GS Trophy selected the following features:

BMW Motorrad optional equipment.
Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment)

6.5-inch TFT display with BMW Motorrad Connectivity
LED daytime running light
LED Blinker
Preparing for navigation device

Off-road tyres

HP Sport Silencer

Original BMW Motorcycle Accessories.

High handlebar.
The high handlebar is 14 mm higher than the standard handlebar. This not only allows for an upright and comfortable sitting position, but also makes driving when standing more comfortable. Safe handling of the motorcycle is much easier (especially in the stand) – a major advantage for enduro riders.

Enduro footrests and adjustable foot brake lever sands and shift levers.
The set of enduro footrests, a height-adjustable foot brake lever and an adjustable shift lever ensures more control when driving while standing and securely holding the motorcycle boots. Thanks to the individual adaptability, the foot levers can thus be optimally operated and controlled – indispensable for sporty off-road use.

Guard.
The hand protection made of impact-resistant and UV-resistant plastic protects the controls from branches and stone-strikings during off-road applications and is aerodynamically tailored to the vehicle. The wind and weather protection offered by the protectors is also impressive: hands and fingers stay warm for longer, even at low temperatures.

Motor protection bracket.
This light and durable electropolished stainless steel bracket protects the motor without compromising the slant clearance.

Enduro underrun protection.
This robust Enduro aluminum motor protection has been specially designed for off-road use and optimally protects the lower engine area.

Seat rally.
Away from the road, the driver usually stands as much as he sits. Therefore, the requirements for the bench are quite different from those of a road bike. The seat rally is narrower and thus provides more freedom of movement on the motorcycle. Since it is higher, it is easier to switch from the sitting position to the standing position. It also offers the padding required for comfort when driving in rough terrain.

Bag for passenger seat.
Attached to the passenger seat, this water-repellent bag has a volume of 2.5 to 8 liters and is perfect for storing small, useful items (such as camera batteries, sunglasses, energy bars, etc.) for the typical day of competition.

LED auxiliary headlights.
The powerful LED auxiliary headlights in a compact aluminium housing provide better visibility and visibility even in fog, rain or snowfall. At the same time, their white, daylight-like light color ensures a differentiated illumination of the street. The LED technology ensures almost maintenance-free operation.

Headlight protection.

Since many GS drivers drive together and swirl up one or the other stone, headlight protection is a must for off-road tours.

Windshield Touring with windshield adjustment.
North Island, South Island?! Eight days of action without a break – the drivers will appreciate the protection of this windshield. For better visibility when driving off-road, this is of course can be reduceable.

So - on to New Zealand!

In the coming days, the 140 motorcycles will be packed in wooden boxes, housed in containers and sent on a long sea voyage to New Zealand.
