Yamaha Tracer 900 GT

Review: Yamaha Tracer 900 GT (Baujahr 2019)

Adventure without adventure

imageApplause, applause - with the mt-07 and MT-09 models, Yamaha landed two real hits. In 2018, they were ranked 2nd (MT-07), respectively 7th place in the admission statistics in Germany. And now, how can you sell more? By expanding the target group! Appearance of the Adventure-Bike Tracer 900 GT from Yamaha, which is based on the MT-09.

The first round

Chicly done. Really. Yamaha can't escape the trend for metallic matt paints either, so the Tracer 900 GT is available in this blue alongside black and grey. Together with the other features of the 2019 facelift - narrower design for side paneling, tank flanks, hand protectors and the new windshield - the whole bike already looks sporty in the stand. Could this focus be a problem, because as an adventure bike the tracer should be able to do anything?
Take a step back, please. The technical basis of the tracer is as already mentioned the Yamaha MT-09. This is a pretty sporty all-rounder, naughty, punchy, fetish, a class bike. However, it cannot be said that it would be the ideal choice for excursions to the lighter terrain or a long journey to the Alpine tour. So the question is: Does the transformation of the Naked Bike MT to the Adventure King GT work? As always, there is only one way to find out exactly that. So helmet up, we'll look at the whole thing for you.

Adventurous, really?

Before the first howling of the three-cylinder, quickly tick off the mandatory program. Seat height 850 to 865 millimeters (adjustable without tools), also fits for something short-legged like me. Space available in front as well as at the back good, handlebars rather narrow for an Advenure bike (aha, goes on with the sport), forward-oriented, rather sporty seating position.
So turn keys around and go. But - it won't be that way. Contrary to all the prejudices that speak of year-round Caribbean temperatures in northern Germany, we also have to endure a few cold days up here in March (see one, at motorradtest.de, you learn something). And so we wear correspondingly thick gloves. However, the Yamaha engineers (failed) put the ignition key so deep in the bellows of the lattice frame that it cannot be caught. Annoying, but one of the very few prints in the B-note of the really - so much be anticipated - clean motorcycle.

On the street (but not next to it)

Sometimes doing nothing is the only right thing to do. And so the Yamaha engineers did just that and installed their fabulous three-cylinder from the 09 unchanged in the Tracer 900 GT. He wants to be turned mostly, so that the 115 hp start jagged to the service, but the engine can also be low-touring, which is why it would not bewrong in an adventure bike on the place. In any case, it has real pressure in all situations of life and even the torque seems to be stronger and stronger than the indicated 87.5 Nm at high 8,500 rpm suggest, which would berather positive for the terrain. Wouldbe the subjunctive? Already twice?

Yes, let's get to the point. The Yamaha Tracer 900 GT is a remodeled MT-09, a curve-dryer that doesn't embarrass itself on the way to the next pass. She can tour, but she doesn't want to. Off-road? Stay away from me. The Tracer is one of the most unadventure-bikig adventure bikes on the market.

This makes it remarkably similar to models such as the Ducati Multistrada 950. Even with this, the suitability for travel or off-road should not be the first reason to move to the dealer. Most riders (!) will appreciate that she is just really good and has been improved during the facelift. Example rear suspension: After the facelift, it is six centimetres longer, which supports the straight line. Or the light-footedness with which the Yamaha Tracer 900 GT, which weighs only 215 kilos, can be thrown around the corner - that's great.

Conclusion - what gets stuck

The author of these lines likes to admit it: he has a penchant for somesloping motorcycles, types and activities. For this reason, the Yamaha is too distant in its unexcitedness, which is a purely personal rating.
The Yamaha is very successful in trying to banish everything from slants except slants from their lives. It's a real tip and will certainly hold its own in the market with all its skills - the Yamaha Tracer 900 GT is ideal for people who are reluctant to make mistakes or drive.

Guys like me have to keep searching. You know ...

Our thanks to Motorrad Ruser for providing the test bike.
